| It was all Hokie all day Saturday, as Virginia Tech dominated the 2008
EIVA East Coast Championships, capturing titles in both Division I and Division
II. The Virginia Tech B team claimed Division II gold with a two game (25-20,
25-14) win over Brockport, leaving just enough time to cheer on the A team in
the Division I finals. After defeating both an upstart Cortland team and a
determined Delaware squad in pool play, Virginia Tech earned a bye for the
quarterfinals. Well rested and focused, the Hokies trounced the two-time
defending EIVA Champion Maryland in the semifinals in two games (25-14, 25-17).
In other semifinal action, the Nittany Lions of Penn State survived a back and
forth slugfest with James Madison, who entered the tournament as the South's top
seed. Penn State escaped in game three with a win (20-25, 25-23, 15-10), setting
up a heavyweight battle with Virginia Tech. Outside Hitter Tom Heffner and
Opposite Gary Vogel did all they could they could to match the Hokies'
onslaught, but in the end, it was not enough. The Virginia Tech defense, led by
a nearly flawless performance from Libero Chris Hazell, proved equal to each
task, while the offense pounded away with kill after kill. Tournament MVP Casey
Doyle meticulously orchestrated a relentless attack for the Hokies, allowing for
the explosive arm of Opposite Bob Hoke to terminate set after set. Virginia Tech
claimed the title in two exciting games, 25-21 and 25-23, giving Head Coach Sean
Callahan the right to proudly distribute gold medals and the championship trophy
to his team.
